Rishikesh 24 Kms. from Hardwar. Located in the laps of lower Himalayas, and is surrounded by scenic beauty of the hills on three sides with Holy Ganga flowing through it. The whole place is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. There are many temples-some ancient, some new along the river Ganges. Rishikesh is important not only as pilgrimage centre closely associated with the Ramayana, but also as home for many important centres of Hindu religious thought and spirituality, and as a very great Yoga Centre. There are a great many ashrams and Yoga institutes here. Rishikesh is also the gateway and the start-off point for journeys to important religious places like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

History of Rishikesh

Rishikesh or Hrishikesh has got its name from the God Vishnu, who appeared as Lord Rishikesh to Rabhya rishi after his austerities. It is also believed that Lord Rama did penance here on the advice of Sage Vashishtha to kill the demon king Ravana. His younger brother Laxman or Lakshman crossed the Ganga river using a jute rope bridge, which later got the name Lakshmana or Laxman Jhula. There is a Laxman temple as well as Ram, Bharat & Shatrughna temples present in Rishikesh on the banks of Ganga near Lakshman Jhula.

How to reach Rishikesh

Nearest airport is Jollygrant which is 18 km away from Rishikesh and is situated in Dehradun. Jollygrant airport, Dehradun is connected to Delhi airport. Taxi services are available from airport to Rishikesh and it costs about Rs 300. Delhi is the nearest international airport which is 224 km away. Delhi is well connected to all major cities in India and many cities abroad.

Rishikesh has a railway station of its own. However, most people prefer Haridwar, which is 25 km from Rishikesh, since not many direct trains halt at the said station. Many trains connecting Haridwar with major cities of India, such as Delhi and Dehradun, ply on a daily basis. So, one can get down at Haridwar and take a cab, auto rickshaw or bus for reaching Rishikesh.
Rishikesh is well connected with all the major destinations of the region, like Delhi (227 Km), Dehradun (42 Km), Haridwar (25 Km) and so on. From Delhi, one has to take NH 58 to reach Rishikesh. On the other hand, from Dehradun, it can be reached taking NH 72. Buses as well as taxis are easily available for Rishikesh, from all these places.
